Survey Results

Here are the results of a survey launched by the BE Safety Unit in 2011. The questions were:

  • What is your main hazard ?
  • What do you do about it currently ?
  • What can you do to improve your safety there ?

Electricity

The danger you mentioned most often is electricity. Even if it represent only a very small part of accidents at CERN, it is still a significant hazard because the consequences of accidental exposure can be very serious.

Do not go near electrical installations without having received adequate training, without authorization and without proper means of protection.

As for any danger, we must also always remain vigilant when you are in an area where danger is present.

Finally do not forget that electricity is everywhere at work and at home.

Ionizing Radiation

The second most important danger mentioned is about ionizing radiation. Although we are not all exposed, some precautions are needed.

You can access an area controlled or supervised only if you received adequate training, you are allowed and you are wearing your dosimeters, and of course you should not remain unnecessarily close to any radioactive equipment.

The part of accidents due to ionizing radiation in all the accidents at CERN is fortunately very low.

Falling objects

Falling object, with falls from one level, are in fact the cause of most accidents reported at CERN, as elsewhere in the industry.

For example in 2010 there were 36 times more accidents in those areas as electrical accidents. It is therefore very important to be vigilant when handling objects or carrying heavy or bulky loads!

Ergonomics in the workplace

The ergonomics in the workplace is also of great importance. Indeed if it is not well taken into account, it can lead to discomfort, pain, or even illnesses.

Do not hesitate to take some time to check if you are properly installed at your workplace even if you are not always in front of a computer.

Everyone is concerned whether in a workshop, laboratory or an office!

Slips, trips and Falls

Slips, Trips and Falls are the greatest cause of injury and lost working time around the world, yet many are easy to avoid: be aware of wet or dusty floors, spilt liquids or pellets, loose mats , icy conditions, poor lighting, cables and trailing leads.

Keep your workplace tidy: you can call 77777 for problems of lighting or leaks, or contact the TSO of the building. (image courtesy of SafetyWorld.com)
